During the frigid winter months, getting out of the house to hit the gym or run around the block sometimes just isn’t a viable option. Working out becomes so much easier and accessible when it’s warm out because you can use a park or an outdoor track as an alternative to the gym. Personally, I prefer working out in nature where I can breathe the fresh air and feel the sun on my face as opposed to exercising in a gym, which can sometimes feel a bit cramped and claustrophobic.
The winter makes everything more complicated. The cold weather makes me feel sluggish, unmotivated and unwilling to leave my warm, cozy house. So instead of slacking on my workout routine and surrendering to my bed and a Doctor Who marathon, I opt for easy, convenient, at-home workouts I can do without opening my front door. I love finding workouts like this one on Pinterest because I get bored of toning exercises easily. Once I do something a few times in a row my muscles start to form a memory of the move and I stop feeling the burn after a while. I like this one because it’s super comprehensive and it really works the large muscle groups in your butt and legs – especially during the wall sit! I like to pair this with a quick run or a cycle for a great leg workout. If you don’t have time to do all the exercises, just do a one-minute wall sit or 20 squats for a mini tone-up before you leave for the day.

All I can say about this one is that the name “Insanity” couldn’t be more accurate. It really is insanely difficult – in a good way! I actually saw on the news that this is the workout some firefighters do to stay in shape. After doing this for just a few days you’ll start to feel your muscles firming up and your cardio improving (the change that was the most noticeable for me was that I didn’t get out of breath when running up stairs!). Don’t worry if you can’t finish a whole video without taking a couple of breaks – it’s supposed to work you out hard.
I’ve mentioned Ballet Beautiful before, and I’ll mention it again because it’s just so great! Mary Helen Bowers is an amazing instructor and the feel of the video is so relaxing and sophisticated with the all-white studio and the classical music. I’m so glad a New York City Ballet dancer came up with this idea because I think ballet is hands-down the best way to tone and streamline your muscles. Don’t be fooled by how short some of the workouts are – they’ll kick your butt and you’ll be feeling the burn right away.
If you’re not looking to do a hardcore tone-up and you just want to have fun and get some cardio in, then Pump It Up is the workout for you. I have so much fun just dancing around my house to the upbeat music that I don’t even consider it a workout, it’s more like having a party for one that also happens to be really, really good for you. After ten minutes of dancing to the music, jumping around like crazy and getting your sweat on, you’ll forget all about the sub-zero temperatures outside.
This old-school favourite is so simple it’s genius. As the name Eight Minute Buns implies, eight minutes is all it takes to get a comprehensive butt workout you’ll really feel. The old-school, 80s feel of the video gives it a trustworthy aspect that tells you they’re using a tried-and-true method that’s lasted throughout the decades – not just a trendy fad workout that won’t be effective and will be over in a millisecond. I like to run on the spot for a few minutes as a warm-up before doing this workout, and then I do the other body parts (eight minute abs, eight minute arms, etc.) Remember to go for the “beep-only” option if you prefer to listen to your own music.
