Soul Sunday: Letting go of negative thoughts

Negative thoughts can sneak up on even the most optimistic people. It’s a habit that can feel next to impossible to kick and affect almost every area of your life from your career to your love life.

More often than not, I find myself in a downward spiral of self-doubt, fear and lost hope. But the thing is, the more you allow this type of thinking, the bigger and more powerful the monster becomes. Every negative thought you have just adds fuel to the fire, and it snowballs until you break down into a pile of sadness, regret and old pizza boxes (well, that’s what my downward spirals look like…).

This is something I try to remind myself of often. I’m still not 100% in control of my thoughts and feelings, so I thought I’d share my journey with you in hopes of inspiring at least one other person to keep going.

Even though most of us know better than to allow negativity to overcome us, it still happens all the time. A lot of us tend to project our own feelings of self-doubt onto the world around us, but it only becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, perpetuating negativity, bad thoughts and the manifestation of unfortunate events in our lives.

It’s so crucial to stop these thoughts dead in their tracks before they wreak havoc on our emotions and life in general. I like to think of it as a choice: we can either wake up in the morning and choose to be happy with whatever is going on in our lives, or we can wallow in the negatives and let them ruin our days.

Again, as I’m writing this I’m reminding myself to do the same. It can be hard to see the light when everything seems to be going wrong, but it’s so important to smile, keep going and never give up!

Eating right and exercising is another thing that can help you in your quest for positivity. Even just going for a quick 15-minute run can improve your mood tenfold and alter your perspective significantly. (Again, another thing I’m working on!).

And above all, be kind to yourself! Beating yourself up for little mistakes will only make everything worse, so go easy on yourself and take it day by day.

Finally, affirmations are key. Louise L. Hay has tons of genius material on this, so I would suggest you read up on her stuff if you’re interested in how it works! Basically, it’s all about being grateful and thanking the universe for the things you desire to attract them even more. (I’m probably doing a really bad job of explaining it, so read up on it if you want more info!).
