Experimenting with grapefruit essential oil

Grapefruit essential oilI’ve always been fascinated by the idea of essential oils. They’re fruits, flowers and herbs in their purest, most unadulterated forms, so of course they’ll have multiple uses in healing work, aromatherapy and beauty.

Recently, I was shopping at the health foods store when I spotted a shelf full of essential oils. It’s rare to see them in regular stores, so I perused through the shelf and resolved to buy at least one of the miniature bottles.

After glancing at each of their names and uses, I decided on grapefruit essential oil. The label explained that it would make the user feel joyful, and when my mother glanced over my shoulder and said “men love the smell of grapefruit, but they don’t know it,” it sealed the deal.

When I got home, I researched a couple ways to use essential oils and the benefits of grapefruit essential oil in particular. I found that they can either be inhaled, used topically or vaporized using steam. In some cases, they can also be added to water or smoothies, but I decided to play it safe and stay away from this as I wasn’t 100% sure (I advise you to do the same — and always make sure to follow the label or consult a doctor before you use any products you haven’t tried before!).

Later that day, I poured a drop of the oil on my wrist so I could smell it throughout the day and, I hoped, feel joyful and happy. I had also read that before you use it topically, you should test it out on your skin to see if you react weirdly, and thankfully I didn’t.

Other ways to use the oils include mixing it with a carrier oil to use as massage oil or pouring a couple drops onto a warm, moist cloth for smelling.

Next up, I think I’ll pour a couple of drops into my bath to enhance my ~spa~ experience. I’ve also resolved to smell the oil each day before I leave the house in hopes that it will alter my frame of mind and energize me. So far, I haven’t noticed much of a difference, but I’ve only just begun my journey with essential oils!

I can’t wait to try more ways of working with oils and experiment with more scents — I think my next purchase will be lavender.
