The weather in Toronto has been absolutely dreary this weekend: insane winds, a non-stop snowstorm, cold, slush—the works. When the weather has me down, I rely even more heavily on things like exercise, music and aromatherapy to lift my spirits and keep my mood elevated.
Scent is one of our most powerful senses for influencing our mood, stress levels, and overall relaxation. Have you ever noticed that a certain scent can bring you back to a memory from your childhood or a specific time in your life like nothing else can? This is because our sense of smell is more closely linked to memory than any other of the five senses.
When a scent enters your nose, your brain sends a signal to the limbic system, which controls mood, behaviour, emotion and memory. So you aren’t just imagining that you feel more relaxed when you smell that lavender room spray: your emotions are actually calming down from the scent.
Different scents have different properties than others. Fragrances like lavender and chamomile promote sleep and relaxation, while citrusy scents can make you feel happier and more energized.
To me, there’s no better way to feel at home in your space than by lighting a scented candle, spritzing room spray, or turning on a diffuser. Here are some of the aromatherapy products I’ve been loving lately:
When I saw this spray in the Saje store, I knew I wouldn’t be able to resist buying it. It combines my love of fairies with a gentle scent (it’s made for children after all!) and of course, glitter. With aloe vera, chamomile and orange, this aromatherapy spray has a delightful, relaxing scent that’s perfect for right after a hot bath just before you get into bed.
I recently started experimenting with different essential oil blends in my diffuser. It’s so much fun trying different combos for sleep, energy, or de-stressing, and I love the energy the fragrant mist brings into a room. If you have a home office or studio, a diffuser is an awesome way to give your mood a lift while you’re working.
I always spritz my room with sage spray before I go to sleep to cleanse the space of any lingering negative energies from the day. I love burning sage bundles, but sometimes it’s easier to spritz a space with a liquid than to get out the matches and get the room all smoky. This smudge spray is charged with the power of positive thought and blessed by a Native American Oneida healer, so it will help to raise the vibration of your home before you hit the hay.
